{"id":441,"date":"2016-03-25T17:08:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-25T15:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.7wonderstravel.com\/blog\/?p=441"},"modified":"2016-04-24T22:40:30","modified_gmt":"2016-04-24T19:40:30","slug":"povitica-a-croatian-treat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.7wonderstravel.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/povitica-a-croatian-treat\/","title":{"rendered":"Povitica &#8211; a Croatian Treat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #1295e0;\">Is it bread or\u00a0cake\u00a0&#8211; who cares when it tastes so good!<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Povitica, or Croatian walnut bread, is a nostalgic favorite of many Eastern Europeans and their descendants.\u00a0Pronounced Pov-e-Tee-za, this Eastern European sweet bread is traditionally served at Christmas, but makes a delicious tea time treat throughout the year.<\/p>\n<h2>Ingredients:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>500 g flour<\/li>\n<li>3.5 g yeast<\/li>\n<li>1 egg<\/li>\n<li>2 egg yolks<\/li>\n<li>100 g butter<\/li>\n<li>500 g walnuts<\/li>\n<li>300 g poppy seeds<\/li>\n<li>600 ml milk<\/li>\n<li>550 g sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 oz rum<\/li>\n<li>100 g raisins<\/li>\n<li>lemon zest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Preparation:<\/h2>\n<p>In a small bowl, stir yeast, a teaspoon of sugar and flour and 1\/2 dcl (1\/2 cup) milk.<br \/>\nLet stand in a warm place for 45 minutes.<br \/>\nOn pastry board, sift flour, add other ingredients and mix everything together in a soft dough.<br \/>\nTransfer the dough into a clean pan sprinkled with flour, cover it with a cloth and put in a warm place to rise for about 30-40 minutes.<br \/>\nWhile the dough ferments, prepare fillings.<br \/>\nBoil the milk and add sugar.<br \/>\nIn one bowl, put the ground walnuts, and in another bowl put poppy seeds.<br \/>\nIn both vessels add raisins soaked in rum, lemon peel, and mix.<br \/>\nPour hot milk over each mixture and stir.<br \/>\nDivide dough into two parts.<br \/>\nRoll one part of the dough to the width of the baking pan &amp; add the poppy seed filling then roll the dough.<br \/>\nRoll the other part of the dough to the width of the baking pan &amp; add the walnut filling then\u00a0roll the dough.<br \/>\nPlace both loaves into a greased baking dish.<br \/>\nPut some melted butter between loafs so that loafs don\u2019t stick together.<br \/>\nBrush loaves with egg yolk , let them rise for another 15 minutes.<br \/>\nPlace in a 180C oven for approx 60 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #1295e0;\"><strong>Dobar Tek &#8211; Bon Appetit<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is it bread or\u00a0cake\u00a0&#8211; who cares when it tastes so good!
